I read Jack The Ripper - The Final Solution around 1977 and it changed my view of the mystery forever. I was an little spunkier in those days and thought I knew everything. But up until the late Stephent Knight's book I had been trying (on an amateur basis) to find out what or who this 'Mad Doctor' was. This book has everything for the detective in all of us. Stephen Knight turns the table on previous author's of ripperology. Knight takes us step by step first through the conditions of Whitechapel as it was in 1888 and then the unfortunate victim's slain most horribly by a murderer (or murderers) who are yet to be officially unmasked. Since Stephen Knight's book all the mad doctor theories have gone and later authors, news articles, movies, stuck with Knight's main theory but with their own slight variations, even the novelist Patricia Cornwell hits on the theory but would have us believe the killer went on murdering into the 20th. century - "Mad Doctor" or Government and Royal cover up - judge for yourself - certainly well worth a look ---James (Dublin)
